ALBERTA CULTURE DAYS IN WOOD BUFFALO 2020

Each year during the last weekend of September, Alberta Culture Days offers free, participatory events and programs that invite the public to discover, experience and celebrate the arts and culture in their communities. This year, Alberta Culture Days has been extended beyond the traditional weekend to a 4-week interactive, immersive arts and culture experience taking place from September 1 to 30, 2020. aCTING 101 FOR ALL AGES

Suncor Energy Centre for the Performing Arts (230 Powder Dr)

This workshop will introduce participants to basic acting techniques in a fun and safe environment. You will be guided through the five basic rules of acting, get tips on what you can do when something goes awry, learn different warm-ups, and try a couple of high-energy improv games.

About facilitators Hanna and Zenon
You might recognize these two goofballs from several local theatre productions for Theatre; Just Because, Keyano Theatre, in local short films and the ADFA One-Act Festival.

Most recently, they both appeared in Lend Me A Tenor, as the pirate captain and first mate in AHOY! A Pirate’s Life For Me, The Drowsy Chaperone and The Myths and Bricks Project (this was a one-man show, but Hanna still takes full credit).

STAGE MANAGEMENT 101 - now virtual!

This workshop will introduce participants to the basics of Stage Management with experienced Stage Manager Geoff Jones. He will answer questions about what a Stage Manager does, how to get started, tips and tricks to make your SM experience better, and much more.

Since the initial workshop had to be cancelled, we are thrilled to be able to offer Stage Management 101 as a virtual workshop! Details will be emailed to participants.

About facilitator Geoff Jones
Geoff is a professional theatre artist who originally hails from Fort McMurray and now works and resides in Vancouver, BC. He has a Diploma in Production (Studio 58), and a Performance Diploma (Keyano College).

As a theatre artist Geoff primarily works as a Stage Manager with companies such as The Arts Club Theatre Company, Caravan Farm Theatre, Green Thumb, Neworld, and The Chop to name a few in Vancouver, but has toured all over Canada and as far as Hong Kong. Geoff’s more specialized fields of stage management include Outdoor Theatre, Site-Specific Theatre, Theatre for Young Audiences, and new works.

Geoff is excited to be back in the Wood Buffalo Region during Alberta Culture Days and to be sharing some of his experiences in theatre.

Unblocking your creativity

An exploration of how to tune into your creative side and prepare to dive into creation! This day will be filled with exercises to help performers and writers figure out what their minds, bodies, and souls need to be ready to make images for the stage. Participants will walk away from this workshop with tools to help them focus on the work, free their mind of self-judgment, and embody their creativity.

About facilitator Jenn Townsend
Born and bred in Fort McMurray, Jennifer graduated from Keyano College with a diploma in performance. She received a BFA in Performance Creation from Concordia University in Montreal. There she worked as an educator of young artists with Geordie Theatre and has worked on devising new works with various artists.

In the past, she has worked as a Program Coordinator and Assistant Director for Theatre; Just Because in Fort McMurray, and her directorial debut landed her the outstanding director award in the ADFA Regional One-Act Festival. She is currently the Artistic Director of Ruminarilive Arts in Beaumont, Alberta. Her creative process involves a lot of breath, release, and play.

YOUTH THEATRE

This workshop is specifically designed for youth between 12-17, featuring theatre basics and games, and improv. Come enjoy the fun of theatre with our Youth Play Production instructors Bailey and Emma!

Youth Theatre is open to youth aged 12-17 of all experience levels and is FREE as part of Alberta Culture Days in Wood Buffalo 2020. Registration required.
